Valentine's Day Special: Love Among the Ruins Poetry Reading Video

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY from Poet Tim Kavi!

Valentine's Day Special: Love Among the Ruins Poetry Reading Video

Happy Valentine's Day! Many of my poems are love poems that speak across different domains of love. This spiritual love poem pays respect to the archetypal goddess! In "Love Among the Ruins" we have a poem excerpted from one of my collections, performed by yours truly, in an outtake from the forthcoming film "Kup of Kavi." The Hindu term 'Hai' used in the poem is an invocation and calling to attention. Enjoy! ~~TK

Of Art, and the Artistic Heart (new poem)

Of Art, and the Artistic Heart

Tim Kavi

a solemn work

there is something to see

I don't know quite yet

what will it be?

but as the notes play on

the fires of inspiration

burning perspiration

show the words that speak

they keep me awake at night

sometimes wrestling with angels

dangling across the abyss

so serious is this?

I am laughing laughing laughing

postwar blisses

on canvases of many

some are blank

and some are puny

but I will damn well say it

on a written page

a flickering screen

a dusty memory

of a forgotten sage

there is a history to be told

but most importantly

a creative burst of energy

as quantum moments unfold

I know what is seen

will be revealed

in the final scene

no longer concealed

a coherent whole

finally uttered

in the words that flowed

now uncluttered

there is only what the art

reveals, sad and contrite

happy and longing for

of words, senses, and bits

of trances

and ecstatic fits

the uttered cannot be brought back

the published is what is said

the last reel

the messy editing room

other words and images on the floor

images await for expressions more

are you a lover

or just a whore?

being or seeming

what's the score?

maybe only the artist will know

for in both cases you are

undressed before the world!

of art, and the artistic heart

of life, and limb

and pounding heart

of kisses in works of love

of meanings in the messages

concealed in stories told

of prophets shaking

peeing in the wind

of actors quaking

before the cameras roll

there is only the revealed

final work expressed

revisions done at last

where all is made manifest

you who imagines

as if an iconoclast

a historical revisionist

of things made past

speak truth if you can

that dialogue will last!

of the two made one

the collapsing waves

of art, and the artistic heart

Oh, be not forgotten

that not for a moment

lost and unbegotten

your words stand sure

it is finally clear

of art, and the artistic heart.

Shooting is Nearing Conclusion on "Kup of Kavi" starring Tim Kavi

Kavi on the set of Kup of Kavi in Rehearsal

Yes, yours truly is being filmed in a documentary-type film that also has comedic elements. I'll be in costume as Kavi the Cowboy, Kavi the retro performer, and Tim Kavi the poet, reading some of my poetry, doing freestyle poems, and spouting mystical jabber!

The shoot has been going on for a couple of weeks now, and it is set to conclude on Saturday, Nov. 12th when we will finish filming on location. It has been a nerve-wracking, yet very fun, experience! Hope you will enjoy the small film when it comes out.  Thanks to TiLu Press, TiLu Film, and Director Ben Lee for making KUP OF KAVI happen. Thanks to the entire crew!

Outtakes from Kup of Kavi the Movie--will also be coming soon! ~~TK

Obscurity (new poem)

Obscurity (new poem)
by Tim Kavi

a message in a bottle

swam the darkened sea

landed on a sandy shore

the contents therein

hopelessly dated

a voice, daring to speak

in a galaxy of voices

an atom sparked in a shell

uncertainty making

no exact measurements possible

yet I shall speak

I shall still dare to exist

making choices no others can make,

quaking in fear, daring to utter

but only fading

how much does obscurity

diminish what the artist says,

screeching like a bat out of hell,

pronouncing like an angel,

scrolls of holy writ,

will there be no hearers?

will there be no readers?

yet I speak, are my words not worthy?

paragraphs, but only monologue?

I want dialogue!

So, I pray draw closer

as my voice withers with whispers

my throat is parched,

I long  for the smooth drinking

of words uttered "well" enough

prose that gets your attention

you dare to deem it so worthy?

based only on who or what you think?

of who I am, or what I have said,

but we are completely only human,

transfixed and far apart,

knowing now, that our lives

are so valuable, wanting meaning

to be seen again, we search

for one another (post-pandemic)

let us turn to the Other,

speaking gentle words of esteem

even kindness and affinity

for all others, we come with

sure words of a brave love.

I only hope we hear, we read,

we esteem each other!

speech acts of sincere meaning

lost in nighttime's dark scheming,

longing for the light,

we can find each other

we can build again

darkened corners of unlit

cityscapes, reduced to rubble

avoiding death, and other trouble,

we will dance again

you shall see in the light

shaking the dust off

we will go to school again

and enjoy the fruits of our labors,

the happiness of each other

finding that obscurity

was only an illusion

a feigned sense of all that was

into the unmistakable joy of what is.

Publication News: Tim Kavi Celebrates National Poetry Month with eBook about Walt Whitman

Poet Tim Kavi celebrates National Poetry Month 2013, with the publication of his essay on Walt Whitman: The Embodied Poet of Existence. Basically, the essay is a brief discussion of Whitman juxtaposed with one of his most famous poems, I Sing the Body Electric. This ebook essay should be of interest to Walt Whitman fans, students, (using it as a resource and Study Guide for Whitman's "I Sing the Body Electric"), as well as Tim Kavi readers. In this essay, Tim Kavi offers a unique perspective as a poet with a background in existential philosophies and psychology.--TiLu Press (Exclusive Publisher of Tim Kavi's Works).

Dear Readers:  Walt Whitman, has long been one of my favorite poets.  The classic 'Leaves of Grass' is priceless.  I hope you will enjoy his poems, and especially his poem: 'I Sing the Body Electric' which his been reproduced in its entirety in this humble eBook essay, where I offer a commentary on that poem. Enjoy! ~~TK   Click Here to Purchase the Kindle Edition.  EPub and other Editions Coming Soon.

My Grandma the Poet (Essay/Poetry) (repost with New Foreword)

A Younger Tim Kavi with His Grandma

New Foreword:

Today would be my maternal grandmother's 113th birthday.

I am reposting the following blog entry (an edited version) about her as a tribute.
(Originally posted here in 2008 & 2012).
I cannot tell you how much she means to me.
She was my earliest poetic influence
and taught me so much...
Happy Birthday Grandma!!

My Grandma the Poet

I never forgot her
her love was the most patient teacher

any grandson could have
and I often told her I loved her so

from as far back as I remember..
I have memories like this:

grandma would say Timmie
and was happy to see some of my first poems
scrawled in crayon
or pencil
so grandma and me would write poems at the same time
when I was little
and she was so big in my little eyes

her gentle ways taught me more about the
goddess than just about anybody
I know

I think grandma was a goddess

she would write poems by the hours
on sheets of typing and notebook paper college ruled
and writing tablets

all handwritten in very large letters

I was high enough to peek over the arm of the chair
to watch what she was doing

if I was good and asked real nice
grandma would read me some
out loud

she had a way with words

these were lyrics and fine ballads

born in 1900 on a homestead she was a country girl
grandpa was a sharecropper, migrant worker
later, a factory worker
they seemed poor
but rich in so many ways

but we were so happy

grandma liked reading romance magazines
in that rocking chair
songs of home, heart, romance

and her and grandpa were married for more than 50 years

you know grandma taught me
a lot

and every once in awhile
when I write a poem now
I think grandma sees it

I hold it up to her just like I used to and you know what?

she grins

and that still makes me pretty damned happy.

here's an excerpt from one of
grandma's poems:

Tomorrow's End
by Lura Newland

My wonderful kids
How I love you so
I must know if there is a place
For me, or a home to go.

I won't need many extras
Just a bed at nite
A place to love my grandchildren
And my poetry to write.

Could I have a chair by a window
With the sun shining in
That would make me so happy
As my eyes grow dim.

I'd be all settled in comfort
Shielded from the cold
What a glorious feeling to know
Then I am growing old...

This Poet's Note: grandmothers can be terribly important. As you can tell, mine was extremely important to me. The poet "gene" certainly runs in my family...my grandma, my mother, and other family members write prose that inspires and moves me across all time.~~TK

FREE Giveaway, Book Announcements, & Special Promotion Announcement (Tim Kavi's VALENTINES BE MINE FOR NINE: Posting 8)

A Valentine's Day Gift for my Readers: FREE Giveaway of a Tim Kavi Short Story; Book Announcements;  & Special Promotion Announcement
by Tim Kavi

My Valentines Be Mine for Nine continues with a giveaway, book news, and announcement of a special promotion. I would like to do something to help spread the messages of love, poetry, hope, and empowerment.

FREE SHORT STORY by Tim Kavi

First of all, I am announcing and offering for the first time, the availability of my short story--American Crow for FREE.  It will be FREE from this day forward and available for download by clicking the cover image on the left margin of this blog--just look for the blue book cover with the big black crow on it about three quarters of the way down the page.  Of course, you can also click here to get the FREE Smashwords version which should offer a file that works for almost ALL eReaders, apps, online reading, text, and even offers a PDF version which most can read with Adobe Digital Reader or a simple PDF reader. Note that Smashwords also offers a FREE Kindle version which is the MOBI file.  Also, as of today, Kobo Books is also offering a FREE version of this short story and you can get that by clicking here for the Kobo Books version.

I hope you enjoy this FREE short story.  The past two days I have been blogging about the special love of family.  And this short story certainly talks about the love of families, in this case about two young men who have joined a gang, in a sense looking for love and belonging, and seeking fatherly love.  Here's the description: as a short story, American Crow is a Fairy Tale of Urban Decay that describes events that transpire when two older men encounter two young thugs on a repeated basis. The result is comedic mayhem and Chaos, where BillyBob, a seemingly omniscient black crow looks upon events with great interest. In the end, it's a song of redemption that only he can sing! Because of the setting of the story, it is rated R for profanity and violence.

SPECIAL BOOK ANNOUNCEMENTS

Lost Love Poems---just in time for Valentine's Day I am happy to announce that this collection of love poems, poems about lost love, has just been published today by Barnes & Noble in an eBook NOOK edition.  You can click here to go to the web page to order that edition.  This book was also recently published by Smashwords (with all its versions) which transcended it's initial offering at Amazon which still has the Kindle edition.  I never formally announced  this title's wider availability until today.  You can click the links just preceding in this paragraph.  Or find the Pink cover on the left side margin and click on those links.  Thank you for your support!

Ascending Goddess---this title is available all over the web at most eBook retailers, and I have not until today, formally announced that in this blog, as per its availability at iTunes (the Apple Bookstore), Kobo Books, or Diesel eBooks.  This title is also recently offered by Barnes & Noble for their eReader--the NOOK. Finally, the book has been available at Smashwords and Amazon still carries it for the Kindle Edition. Look for the buttons under the Ascending Goddess eBook cover on the left margin (showing holy mountain Kailash) or the links in the just preceding text. Thanks!

Emerging Goddess--my first collection is still only offered as a Kindle Edition through Amazon.  This is because I have been participating in giveaways every few months through their KDP select program.  Nevertheless, that exclusivity will end shortly, and the book will become available at Smashwords and all the other platforms. Thank u u u !

NOTE:  All of these titles will be published on Google Play, other eBook platforms, and regional mobile phone eBook platforms in specific countries--such as India.  I am happy to say that print editions for all these titles are still scheduled for publication, those are just taking a short while longer.

I would like to thank all of my blog readers and those that have purchased my work--with that in mind let me tell you about...

A SPECIAL  PROMOTION TO MY READERS (and those who have purchased my eBooks):
Coming very soon I will be making a very special announcement here in this blog and providing a link to a page on my home web page www.timkavipoet.com---where those who have purchased any of my eBooks will be entered into a random drawing to win a special prize.  So save those email receipts showing you bought one of my books!!  For any readers (up to the first 25) who buy all three of my current eBook collections (or make an equivalent donation at the web page) they will receive the prize automatically. (Also ten lucky random blog commenters will be entered into the drawings also-- and that requires no purchase!) Special Shout Out to my Readers from India (blog entry)

For years, my readers from India have been strong supporters of this blog and my writing.  They have enjoyed and supported my works, and many have become online friends and among them also are fellow poets, seekers, and mystics.

I am honored by their attentions, and kind words.  Indians are among the kindest, most spiritual, and friendliest readers of them all. Now, I don't mean to exclude any of my readers from elsewhere, as this blog gets visitors from all over the world. As you will see below, Amazon has made a special announcement that finally makes my work available in India.

I also wanted to mention my Indian readers, because they often read my blog and make comments to me both here and at Facebook. I appreciate that very much! My friend Shefali, deserves special mention and thanks in this regard!

India is after all, the land of spiritual traditions that honors many different Goddesses, including Parvati, Ma Durga, Kali, and others.  One of their sacred landmarks, Mt. Kailash, is featured on one of  my book covers and is often mentioned in my poems. Many of the Hindu goddesses are mentioned or at least influential to my Goddess poetry as well.  I hope that all my Indian readers know that I have nothing but deep respect for them, their country, and their traditions.  I feel that way about all the countries of my readers in the world as well.

I was very pleased to see that Amazon (as of yesterday) has finally opened up both the Kindle store and the Kindle Direct Publishing platform to readers and authors from India.  This means that my Indian readers and friends can purchase (in Rupees) my two Goddess collections: Emerging Goddess, and Ascending Goddess as well as download many other Kindle works. Although you can still download apps for Kindle Ebooks that work on PC, laptop, cloud internet, IPad, Iphone and Android devices, the Kindle reader family is also available all over India at Croma stores.

So, I was very happy to see the following announcement by Amazon yesterday:

"Amazon launches the India Kindle Store with the biggest selection and lowest prices in India. You can now pay in Indian Rupees to get access to a vast selection of titles, new releases, bestsellers, and works from a range of Indian and international authors. Readers will also find exclusive Kindle books, as well as over one million free classics available to download and read on Kindle."

You can visit the India Kindle store by clicking here.

You can see my Goddess collections here.

I know this sounds like a shameless plug for Amazon (and my Goddess poems),  but I hope you will see that it is also a plug for India and Indian fans.  They are among the most faithful readers of my poems. I will say I do appreciate India, Indians, and also what Amazon has done for writers all over the world through their Kindle publishing program.

Thank you once again to India, Indians, and to the rest of my readers from all over the world! You are the best.  Namaste! ~~TK

Update:  I am also happy to report that as of early 2014, my books are also available on the Indian platform Flipkart !~~TK

My Grandma the Poet (A Memoir) (repost with New Foreword)

new foreword:

Today would have been my maternal grandmother's 112th birthday.  I am reposting the following blog entry about her as a tribute (originally posted here in 2008).  I cannot tell you how much she means to me.  She was my earliest poetic influence and taught me much... Happy Birthday Grandma. Love, that's the biggest reason I write poetry. ~~TK  BTW, the style is open prose, so forgive [sic] the lack of punctuation and informal qualities.

My Grandma the Poet (A Memoir)

A true story from my hometown life:

I grew up in a small town and loved grandma and visited her house
I stayed there lots of weekends
even until my late teens

she made homemade candy
and treats, good homecooked meals
and the holidays everyone in the family came there

aunts and uncles and lots of cousins
there weren't any boy cousins
although I had two brothers
(they were much older than I)
I made mudpies with my girl cousins
who giggled incessantly
and told me how to cook
fine pies in the mud

grandma tended to her kids
but when she got older she worked a little...

grandma was the town "cookie" cooking burgers that all the teens loved at the soda five and ten

you know the malt shops with soda jerks? in the 1950s...

post war bums with some slicked back hair and cars with big fins

susie was over in the corner
eatin' grandma's burgers

grandma was behind the counter and she grins

watchin the drama unfold
susie ignored the man's advances
and all the other cooks
cackled

susie was a real good looker

I had a burger there in the Soda Fountain place in the late 70S before they tore down the place
the same owner was there but he was Cookie now, and grandma was living in the twilight of her life. the place was empty, but the food was still good and you could get a lot for your money all the noise was down the street at some fast food place. There wasnt even a battle of the bands no more. The owner worked there with his son who never had another job and stayed with his daddy till the end even though he was all grown

I went to grandma's house for a visit soon
after seeing her old working place

grandma was rockin
in her rocking chair
writing poems and crocheting and watching Bonanza, Highway to Heaven (she loved Michael Landon) and, Portland wrestling

when she gave advice you listened

I never forgot her
her love was the most patient teacher

any grandson could have
and I often told her I loved her so

from as far back as I remember..
I have memories like this:

who the hell is Tim Kavi and Why?

Tim Kavi is a name by which I write my poetry, non fiction, and other writings with spiritual or mystical themes. I was a teenage mystic is not a horror movie but was a real experience for me as I became a recognized spiritual being in a group of seekers in the 1970s and early 80s. I soon expanded my views into other traditions outside the limited realm where I was first recognized, and out of which spiritual insights were confirmed as manifested in a ministry experience where I spoke to groups in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Later, I began to use my skills at talking to people and sensing things about them as a professional healer working in the field of mental health. I worked fulltime in that field for over 35 years, and still work part time in a hospital setting and the rest of my time as a consultant.

The bottom line is that I sense deeply that we are all more connected than many of us realize. I am convinced that mind is more than a local phenomenon. I believe very much that "mind is in the world." I will comment upon this in other entries.

My spiritual practice is eclectic, with my leanings being more on the Buddhist or Taoist side, but I am very comfortable in my awareness of the mystical tradition and traditions from a variety of perspectives. I find that I am still aware and in touch with my mystical side, but I do not choose to embrace it in a fanatical manner or otherworldly sense, inasmuch as Buber taught that the sacred is in the everyday. Consequently, I suppose I have been heavily influenced by my early Pentecostal Charismatic influences, as well as Jewish mysticism and existentialism, the latter since I have been a scholar of Martin Buber, and studied directly under his most well known student and biographer, Maurice Friedman, and also attended a private school based upon his teachings. A young Friedman saw himself as a mystic as well as Buber. Consequently Buber, Friedman, have been as much a mystic to me as say St. John of the Cross, Meister Eckhardt, Boehme, George Fox, AW Tozer, Madam Guyon, or William Branham, as Buddhists such as Nagarjuna, Milarepa, or Santideva have been to me as well.

My poetry influences are those who have bravely dared to be different in the face of conventions, not always as a mere rebel, but because like the mystic they had a message that they were compelled to speak, and some were flat out romantics. I would count among these poets, Whitman, Byron, Rilke, Keats, Kerouac, Ginsberg, Rumi, and of course, Rimbaud. Also, Dante, Blake, and Baudelaire cannot be overlooked.

In this blog I will not comment much upon my most recent work, written as Tim Kavi. It may include some comments as to what I hope my work could mean but it is better that I not comment much at all. Let the work speak for itself is a general principle.

Please note that my work listed here cannot ever be exhaustive and include everything. If I publish everything here that I wrote, then there will be nothing new for readers in my published collections. Likewise, note that all of my poems that are in my published collections are likely not here in the blog. They might have been here at one time; and there may be a few exceptions of which I will footnote that my publisher has given permission for them to be here.

I guess in the final analysis I do not want to be known as a mystic, not really, I would rather be known as a writer, and if the utterances of a writer are sometimes similar to those of mystics I am content in that.

Why did I choose the pen name of Tim Kavi? It is simple really. If you look at the words you will discover that the names blend two major spiritual traditions of East and West. In the Christian Bible, there was a Timothy, and  Kavi is a Hindu name and speaks of someone writing poetry. It is hoped that when you read my poetry or other writings as Tim Kavi that you sense this blend between EAST and WEST. However my intent is poetic and not theological in terms of any doctrine, as I am just as likely to refer to the goddess as I am God or angels. Perhaps my work appears to be less masculine in perspective in terms of divinity without masculine pronouns, this is intentional in all of my work. To me the feminine completes the masculine and is the more needed and more powerful force. In much of my work the captive masculine figure always seeks the freeing feminine.

I must implore you to realize that we are not ever who we appear to be in totality, instead, I believe that we very much happen to each other in the present moment and that is a better definition of who I am, and who I am with you, or who we are to each other as we experience one another. When you are reading my poetry I hope you are having a dialogue, and an encounter between person and person. The concrete lived out of that is what happens when you read my work, or better yet when we encounter another human being person to person.

So, finally, it is in my writing as Tim Kavi, that I have blended my life experiences and my fictions fantastic and real into a source of creativity that is not always about what it seems to be on the surface. Many readers will think that I write of love on the plane that is most familiar to us, and perhaps my poetry is about such embodied love at times, but it is as equally about spiritual love for the divine, as it is physical love for a person we love, or the goddess, or in seeking the transcendent. The transcendent is often lost to us unless we seek...after all, so don't be surprised if you see the seeker in my poems, the longing, the devotional, even the worship--as this is also the way of the mystic-poet as well.

Ultimately, I believe that my work is about personal freedom, the assertion of free will, and the struggles and choices we make in finding love, divinity, and trying to make sense out of our own existence. -- TK
