Valentine's Day 2013--Why I Love You So (poem)

Why I Love You So
by Tim Kavi

sitting near your feet
I heard you singing
a love song
along with the radio
so sweet

my happy eyes
misted
with joy
at the love you have
for your happy boy

all day long
I look up at you
and hear the notes
of your love
washing everything
away

all my sadness
sorrow is gone
because of
your happy tone

and then
just when I think
I am alone

you sing again
the happy songs
and I see you
smile  and I know
why I love you so.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY TO ALL !
Tell someone why you love them! ~~Tim Kavi

More About Goddesses: Aphrodite and the Story of Eros and Psyche (new column) (Tim Kavi's VALENTINES BE MINE FOR NINE: Posting 9)

Aphrodite observes Eros & Psyche (classical view)

More about Goddesses: Aphrodite and the Story of Eros and Psyche
by Tim Kavi

Aphrodite is often hailed as the goddess of beauty, love, procreation and pleasure. She is also hailed as the protector of sailors as she was born from the sea foam. Aphrodite is the daughter of Zeus and Dione, making her one of the most vital goddesses in Greek mythology.

Given her nature, Aphrodite is a very personal and intimate goddess, invading the secret places of her followers and remaining close to those that are loyal to her. She can easily bring about a feeling of wonder and magic, particularly encouraging a natural feminine power, but Aphrodite is also capable of deceiving the heart when exalting the sensuality of a couple’s union as she sees fit.

The nature of Aphrodite and her ability to manipulate the magical or deceptive side of sensuality is noted in her son Eros’s union with Psyche. Eros is the god of passionate sexual love while Psyche was a princess that was so beautiful that many treated her like a goddess. Some would even make sacrifices or perform symbolic gestures in her name, which caused much jealousy among the other goddesses, particularly Aphrodite.

In her jealousy, Aphrodite sent her son Eros to put a spell on Psyche, making her fall in love with the ugliest man on the Earth. When Eros arrived, he was so stunned by Psyche’s beauty that he accidentally pricked himself with one of his magical arrows, falling in love with her instantly. Feeling guilty for his deeds, Eros worked to undo the spell and then left. Enraged that her son could not manage this deed, Aphrodite cast a similar spell to seal Psyche’s fate.

Concerned that their daughter would marry a monster, they summoned the Fates. They told her parents to take her to a mountain to leave her for her beastly betrothed. Her parents eventually obliged, and Psyche was left on the mountain in her sorrow. Seeing her tears, Zephyr the West Wind took her away to a lush forest in the valley below. Here she wandered until she found a palace with invisible servants and an invisible lover that would care for her.

Psyche was welcome to enjoy these benefits so long as she only united with her lover in darkness. After much time together, Psyche could no longer manage her curiosity and lit a candle to see her lover, Eros. Hurt by her suspicions, Eros flew away. Psyche’s suspicions show the conscience’s unwillingness to live with a relationship surrounded in darkness. Given this impossible task, Psyche appealed to Aphrodite asking to be reunited with Eros with no conditions.

Aphrodite conceded, provided Psyche enter the underworld and place a drop of Persephone’s beauty in a box. Persephone is known as the beauty of the depths because she was taken down to the Underworld to be the bride of Hades. Determined to be reunited with her lover, Psyche completed this final task, achieving a state where the dark anonymity of her previous love and the divine, personal aspects of love could merge.

Eros and Psyche were given one of few wedding ceremonies given in the presence of all the gods on Olympus. The gods celebrated this new union with a great feast that celebrated the union of the soul, and Eros, the representation of sexual love. At this blessed union, Aphrodite danced in celebration.

Poet's Afterword:  Appropriate for Valentine's Day, today's blog celebrates the balanced love of Psyche and Eros (aka Cupid) --the love that came to light in complete openness and blissful reunion.  A love that Aphrodite and the enitre Greek pantheon celebrated. This concludes the First Annual VALENTINES BE MINE FOR NINE daily blogging celebration leading up to Valentine's Day.  However, there will be a special Valentine's Day poem posted tomorrow. HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY to all of my readers--may your lives be filled with love and loving others. My writings and love poems are always an encouragement to love--for life is just too short for anything else.~~TK

'I Know You...Hand in Hand' (new anniversary poem) (Tim Kavi's VALENTINES BE MINE FOR NINE Posting 5)

I love You Hand in Hand (new poem)
 和老婆手牵手
by Tim Kavi

special times
are these
moments in a history
that flies past

that says
I love you!
each to the other
from their heart
as that love
is the language
of all words expressed

in the fast lanes
of modern life

as we hold onto something
each other
sometimes that richness
is all we've got

but what richness!
precious find
true gold rush
those that truly love

that love would bring
one from two families
two worlds apart
even across the universe
to join

hand in hand

that looking back now
there is still
the joys of discovery
as we see each other
eye to eye

hearts beat
next to each other
in the living security
of all that is
lived out

hand in hand

gentle whispers
may make the moment
seem less sensational
than it is

but in those whispers
are mighty shouts
declarations of love
that say

I know you!
I love you!
hand in hand

that is the
eternal bread
the lasting truth
and the destined
determination to love

to say
we will turn again
to each other
facing all this life
is;

hand in hand.

Poet's Afterword:  Posting 5 in my VALENTINES BE MINE FOR NINE---is a special anniversary poem. And today (Feb. 9th) is the actual anniversary for two very special people.  Now, the Chinese have a very special concept that symbolizes the union between two people in love, and this is often stated in English as 'hand in hand'. In this case, the narrator of the poem is specifically the husband to the wife; hence the special 'hand in hand' designation towards the wife-- 和老婆手牵手 .

'Two Hearts Carried' (New Poem) (Tim Kavi's VALENTINES BE MINE FOR NINE! Posting 3)

Two Hearts Carried
by Tim Kavi

sometimes love
is such a hasty reaction
that it seems
two hearts
were carried with the wind

Yet there in the mercy
of dialectic's unfolding
there is a settling
in the nest
of some high cliff
where lovers belong
after an act of great love

as sometimes
it was a wind
borne by the very breath
of love itself

and sometimes
there is no understanding
even among the wisest
as to what love has done

or what has been done
in the name of love
of what legends love has brung

there is always the otherwise
of love's surprise
do not throw yourself
young lovers
nor off the cliffs be flung

but carry each other
up higher on the wings of love
turn to each other
again and again
climb up higher
as your ladder of love
has another rung

sometimes one
will carry both hearts
with such care
sometimes the other
will be made alive
bravely to love

to look again
at the new place of love
for your might
has this time
brought you there

for in your nest
let there be no night
but only a teaching
lessons for each other
on the next stages of flight

navigation!
no leveling I say
fly again
fly again
break up the hardened ground
plant your seeds of love
while in that lofty place

let it stand and grow
for two hearts were carried
by destiny's throw

into the unknown
borne by the wind
of love
carried with grace
two carried hearts
always come again

to the nest of love.

Poet's Afterword:  Posting #3 of Tim Kavi's VALENTINES BE MINE FOR NINE is a special new love poem. It's a poem that tells us that sometimes love responds to all of Nature, and  sometimes it is born of struggle but always it is the carrying of two hearts...to each other and by each other. ~~TK

At a Moroccan Wedding (wedding poem) (Tim Kavi's VALENTINES BE MINE FOR NINE! Posting 2)

At a Moroccan Wedding
by Tim Kavi

happy couples
inspire us all
to seize love
face love
in it be tall

and when moments
like this
reward that search

we know
we have loved
powerfully
strongly
and made history

so made brave
by our love
we confidently
face life

together as
husband and wife!

Poet's Afterword: In posting #2 we have a special wedding poem (short but sweet) for a special pair of friends of mine.  So to Judy and Abderrahim, I wish you continued happiness in the power of love. You are not only a muse, but a great blessing over the years.  You guys have been reading my poems for over six years! Love's DNA (poem) (Tim Kavi's VALENTINES BE MINE FOR NINE! Posting 1)

Love's DNA
by Tim Kavi

Infinite loves
bend in the helix
that becomes the
model
of coded
instructions
for the complexities
of yet more
design

in a love
that speaks to
another kind
of bonded pair

there
in our love
is the Nature's
schooling
natural selection
of destiny's
twisting

purpose

until there
is no drifting
as variations
and plans
unfold

as long
as poems
and songs
and novels
and stories

have been told

there is the
power
of love
to code itself and
rebuild itself
again and again

this is the love
that flows
in the between
in the
meeting
of person to person

the memories
of the whole
human race
the ancients
knew

what scheme is this
what dream

but
biology's
revealing
of something much
deeper

still
destined
in the human heart's will

to love
to say
to utter
beauty and true
words
with power

that say:
I love you!

Poet's Afterword:  My first selection in Tim Kavi's VALENTINES BE MINE FOR NINE is a love poem that reveals that although there is plenty of mystery in a love at first meeting---there is always the code that gets lived out between two loves.More tomorrow!~~TK

Goddess in Motion Redux--Part III (poem)

Goddess in Motion Redux--Part III*
by Tim Kavi

walking down
the wooded plain
country road

your music never stops
I am humming
along with the birds
but then
a hushed silence
this time, greets me

I wanted to run
to meet you
but was constrained

held back by my pride
I felt ready to burst
to run to meet you
to fall on my knees

you were walking
towards me
I was watching you move
totally hypnotized

I saw you as the statue
in every garden
the ones that are Goddesses
fully in view

then I realized
Goddess in Motion
your swaying hips
meant I needed
no love potion

there was only the drunkenness
of your love
that met me with aged
expressions of pleasure

your singing smile
meant
I needed no musical note
to hold you in my sight
a beautiful vote

of affirmation
in the Spring times
of your bliss
there is only the wine
of your lasting kiss

for Goddess in motion
you are my morning delight
when your dress moves
in the wind
it still covers
all of you

when upon gentle revealing
I saw Aphrodite's undoing
stare; not concealing
one moment of your prayer

for it falls to the wooded floor
only with your permission
our sweet love
is my mission

a persistence of vision
in a valley of despair
a journey of hope
longed for destination

Goddess in motion
you walk like a dance
of great skill
a fresh romance
of freedom's will

to test every fiber
of my mind, soul, and being
that shouts fidelity
to your love's scheming

to turn to each other
in the birdsong filled
forest
our love is true
and ever dreaming

for this is only a timeline
twill soon be over
this one life is not enough
to praise your Goddess stuff

Goddess in motion
I need no love potion
to see
you are the sweetest
If love is ever to do
it must be with You

for 'tis a mystery solved
the attainment
of what many seek

Goddess in motion
Nature holds you in sacred view!

*Poet's Afterword:  The original version of this poem was written in 2009. Original Version is Here. From time to time, I add to it with new stanzas and feelings of devotion.  This time, in the new Part III, I have added new stanzas between the stanzas of the original poem. The image here is 'Swirl of the Skirts' by Sushobha Jenner. Hope you enjoy it!~~TK

Infinite and Measured. (New Poem)

Infinite and Measured.
by Tim Kavi

Infinite.
And measured.
How do you measure
the measureless?
Experience the unfathomable;
live on the arms of the spiral?

You exist
live in it, move in it
breathe in it
smile at Her love

infinite
in every moment
stretching across memories
across all time
in myths, legends and odes

there she frequents
visits, and in complexity
unfolds

around the perfect circled
bend, time moves like a slithering
serpent, making old
robbing us of being bold

but we stand in love
it is infinite
reaches from birth to death
yet measured
in every breath

when I hold Her in You
embraced by your love
I realize in the finite experience
drawn in the hills and valleys
of our joint experience

we have touched
collapsed the circling
around us
bent fragments of infinite
love, we are in finite

measured out
every day
just in your kiss

I know I am loved.

Bridge to Human Hearts (New Poem)

Bridge to Human Hearts
by Tim Kavi

You know one day
I thought I was lost
and I thought I was alone
but then I saw you
on the bridge to my heart
saying: Darling, please come home!

one day the universe
was smiling
angels played along
with their starry tunes
educated by your smiling love
better than many full moons

they didn't need to scheme
Cupid's arrows had already flown
when you walked to my open arms
reality became like a dream

love's roads
destiny's crooked turns
I know already
my heart calls to you
can you hear it?

now let me meet you
in the middle of the bridge
and take me to your heart
your love
for together we make a path
that always leads home

a place where love always abides
across the bridge to both our hearts
where there was no mistaken
walk, steps, or stumbles,
there was only running

to each other's arms
to each other's hearts!

Butterfly Lovers and the Legend of Liang Zhu (Essay)

"Butterfly Lovers and the Legend of Liang Zhu" (Essay)
by Tim Kavi

In my poetry, the image and symbol of the butterfly, and its predecessor, the chrysalis (or cocoon) is a recurrent theme. To me, as a Westerner, these symbols often personalize  personal development, change, and metamorphosis.  Butterflies are also seen as beautiful winged creatures. To me, many times, the symbol of the butterfly is a flight to freedom and a discovery of our beautiful natures. In any regard, let me simply say that the winged flight of a butterfly is a symbol of a flight to freedom.  Perhaps it is the freedom to be what we always wanted to be, and is therefore a flight to acceptance and being.

In the case of a pair of butterflies, perhaps we have the acceptance of this freedom to be with another, but there are other ways to view this beautiful symbolism of butterflies together and to accept the flight of butterfly lovers.

In the ancient Chinese legend of Liang Zhu which has also been called the 'Oriental Romeo and Juliet', we have a remarkable Chinese folktale from the Jin Dynasty which was about 1600 years ago.  This legend which most school kids learn about in China, has birthed a number of inspirational works including, operas,
concertos, literature, and art.

The story goes like this. In order to pursue her studies, Zhu Yongtai disguised herself as a man.  Over the next three years of study, she fell in love with her fellow student, Liang Shanbo. The legend has it that she admired his intellectual capabilities.  During this time, and up until it was time to leave the school, she kept dropping hints to him, but he missed their meaning. Later, after realizing Zhu Yongtai's intentions, he went speedily to her family to propose marriage. Unfortunately, her father had already betrothed her to another man, which was a grave disappointment to Shanbo.  He became sickly, and after several incidents of illness, he died.  Later, on the day of her wedding, Zhu Yongtai  was riding in  her processional cart (some accounts say boat), and she decided to pay a memorial to Shanbo at his tomb.  It was very windy and there were thunderstorms.  The storms caused the tomb to open up.  Yongtai then lept into the tomb to be with her lover.  Later, they transformed into a pair of beautifully colored butterflies, and flew out of the tomb wing to wing together, and headed towards a rainbowed sky.

A beautiful and touching story.  The Legend of Liang Zhu is another example of beautiful transformation, acceptance, and becoming transfigured beings--in this case the jump and flight into a true love across a rainbow draped sky.~~TK

Confessions (New Poem)

Confessions
By Tim Kavi

Did you ever want to tell
Someone on fluttering wings
that you loved them? Tell
them again and again.

The flight of the winds and
currents of time and history
pulled at you, snatched at you
and carried you away from them?

Sometimes they did not know
sometimes they were unwilling
other times they did not care at all?

They may have even allowed the wind
to carry them away.

Yet you yearned to proclaim
testify and shout no matter what
a fool you looked?

That you loved them so much
while some said the culture, the times.
the language made you all wrong for them,
but in your heart you felt it was right
and they said it too, in their authentic
moments?

You tried so hard to in your efforts
because you never wanted to fly away
from them? The universe clutching you
in its mighty fist, while you were enclaved
in the rocks and cliffs of a despair
that never lets you go, and you could not,
would not, speak it to them?

Did you ever see in their eyes the
loathing wrongness of your fluttering approach
so that they missed you, not one bit? Until
famished, you are not hungry, until
thirsty, you did not dare drink?

Longing for them in the loneliness
of your despair, you loved, although
no answers to your prayer? Delicious
entreaty feeds your stomach with
the aching sourness of your existence?

Only to be told, they did love you
did want you, did need you, but they held
back? If only you paid attention, did not
faint, never gave up, hoped the
hopes that all is not lost? Until
the suffering quietness of their bold
assertion that they would 'love you forever'
but you found out they did not?

It is only then, that you realize,
know, absolutely certainly that you
are only alone utterly and can
only love yourself? Yet you did not
let go of that walk along the
narrow ridge. Searching for the bridge
to another human heart?

For it is only then that you can
begin to see the Other. Coming
from the other side of the
abyss? Waiting for their kiss?

Waiting so long that temples
fade into dust. Clouds eddy
together in the collapse of
empires, dynasties, and governments?

There is no unruly soul, as this;
those that thought love had
kissed but only was left to this?
The utter despair, loneliness, and
unwillingness of one who has lost
their way?

Not giving up hope, the Seeker searches,

crosses the rope bridge, that swings
in the wind of existence? Precarious
search to a blind alley, but faith
persisting, guides to habitat of heart,
reveals a path to that
certain kiss?

Of the Other lonely, and knowing
one you had found each other that
all hope was finally not lost? And
once finding each other, clinging to
one another with a grip everlasting
hounding, seeking you out wherever
you went in the Universe?

Knowing completely at last this, that
in your twin knowing there is only
the oneness of each other? Finding
peace at last in a love steady
and true, that never parts. As you
beat your wings in the steady above
and pulse of the other's heart?

To persist, to remember, to find love
again in the absolute surrender to each other.

Universal Translator (New Poem)

Universal Translator
by Tim Kavi

your words are like kisses
our love is
the universal translator

your eyes
invitations to adoration
speaking a strong heart
of returned love

I beheld you
full of light
as you moved through
space and time

majestic sounds
my heart melts
like butter
in the heat of your love

where You and I go
what we say to each other
needs no translation

we are not 'lost in translation'
but found
in the arms of love

your kisses
are the painter's strokes
of desire

and the power of your
love reaches me inside
my heart
in every language

for universal
all reaching
to the uttermost
is what you say to me
in the language of your love.

Ode to the Handsome Swede (Special Poem from 2011)

Ode to the Handsome Swede
by Tim Kavi

humming a sweet song
the poetry

keeps flowing

when across the green hills of Sweden

the wedding party
was going

your sweet melodies
the wind is blowing

bringing sweet incense of perfume

innocence of love
when your smile lit the room

the handsome Swede
was smiling too
as your love
filled
the happy groom

thoughts of peace
and no more
empty homes

two hearts
turned towards
love

and dispelled
the lonely glooms

the handsome Swede
hummed
existential songs

his new bride
had come home

she made ready
a gown of red
adorned
in Chinese love

traditions
had been met

and yet
there was
still
the promise
of even more

for all the glories
their love had
in store

for all the stories
could never be sold
in thousands
of novels
of myths
and legends

every time
their love was told

you see it seems
simple

but no love ever is

they found each other
and that's all
the mystery 'tis

two hearts
thought they had been
left
only to find the other
behind the veil's
cleft

a great love
with wings
flew to him

the handsome Swede
said

and for all
this there
was destiny
forever

plainly read.

Poet's Afterword--this poem celebrates a wedding between two very special friends of mine.  It was originally a private poem for the two of them, but  'reappears' here in my blog by their permission.  I know you will join me in congratulating the happy couple, who exemplify a wonderful destination of love--a cross cultural and happy marriage across two of the kindest hearts I've ever known.~~T.K.

seeing you (smile) again (new poem)

seeing you (smile) again
by Tim kavi

words cannot capture
the beauty of your grace
moving all over the place
you are Hepburn
in that dress

the calm of your loving touch
the huge smile
when in your arms I am brought
home again to our love

when I look at your photos
and see all the happiness
your love has brought
I am happy to see you again
and again

when after traveling
many miles
thinking of all the years
we have loved

Then I see you and your love once again
I am reminded
that if I could

I would never depart
your loving heart
staying at the end of the road
until the end of the world

It's a 'Philadelphia Story'

and when
I close my eyes
I feel you close
I know you are still there
I am seeing you again
even then

in a love constantly arriving at
always speaking loudly
to the heart of a traveling man

I'm smiling too
in a love ever present
and never forgot.

You Can Give Me Your Heart (New Poem)

You Can Give Me Your Heart
by Tim Kavi

whenever you are ready
and safely decide to
I know it is an act of trust
but I say and show in all I do
that I love you

you can give me your heart
I will only love it
cherish it
kiss it
breathe on it
because I love you

I will never ever
hurt you
but only hold you
and your heart so very close

for when I hear it beating
I hear the power of life itself
and I feel the beauty of all love that is

and when I hold it
I know I hold you
your very life in my hands

I hear the rhythms
of your love
and they are the sounds of a universe
a universe
of your never ending love.

Romantic Swoons (New Poem)

Romantic Swoons
by Tim Kavi

breathless
no strength to tarry
in my wait for you
I soon realized
your love had invaded
my heart
As I reached the top of the hill

You were there
coaching me
soothing me
of all my hurts and fears

how could I not call to you?
calling out many years

lonely seeking nights
and finding you
in the days of your love?

until a great
and mighty wave
of love made our love

collapsed our love
into one expression

days and nights
you and me
until quietly
there was only
a lasting hug

wherever I went
alive in your eyes

I saw you standing there

goddess revealed

as sure as Kwan Yin
compassionate arms reaching
speaking breeching seeking

breaking
rendering in two
all the cultural walls within

until it was only Our love
that mysteries
held in swoon

brought forth fruit
and found only to
be ever present all the time
never missing really
never empty
never rendered

to see it and know
only it has ultimately mattered.

Valentine's Day (New Poem)

Valentine's Day
by Tim Kavi

I say to you and answer you
yes I will go with you
Come to you wherever you call me from

I am clothed in any garments
the warmest of all if needed
as long as I am clothed with your love

I am safe too in all that you do
your wings are spread out for me
as Goddess I know

sweet and full of joy
laughing
you will carry us both
on the wings of love

to the Milky Way
and far away from here

I know wherever we go
I will be safe
and we will return to our people
and to each other again and again

loving free
no matter what each dawn does bring

I am yours forever
and you are mine, gentle seraph
in a portrait of love
painted divine.

after love (new poem)

after love
by tim kavi

after love
super awareness
love is all around us
binding us
in the love that is endless

she says
I love you so much
he says
I love you so much
their light bathes the dark room

he says:
I'm having incredible peace
she says:
I feel very connected with you

their love descends from the mountains
it displaces the gloom

he says when I see you
I see the most beautiful woman
for you are amazing

she says
thank you honey

they say:
even when I think it's not possible
looking at an old woman I see young
or a young woman but seeing old?

the river still winds down from the mountain
where the stone Goddesses stood

now, there are just fragments
but still a Goddess is seen
that love still reaches
all the corners of the Earth
and it never stops seeking
timeless refuge

so even though I thought
it could never be
was never possible
I love you even more

in the afterlove
each one
feels their love is the greatest ever seen
smiling like Buddhas
in the warmth
of maya's dream

songs of our afterlove
memories of collective gathering wings
I see you morphing
every Goddess ever seen

a thousand times
from the moment of creation
conception
to ultimate development

the statues still stand
but it is your love
forming each and every one of them
until only a sighing wind of sleep
overcomes the visitation

but even then!
Then, your love moves
among the rocky landscapes
winding down the trails
gently leading us again and again
to our afterlove

as I navigate the moonbeams
of my starry eyed dreams.

presence (reposted poem) to all my friends: new and old

presence (a repost)
(to all my friends, new and old, especially the new ones)
by Tim Kavi

dancing beings
find each other
across many
lifetimes again
and again

why do they
find each other
sharpen each other
recoqnize each other
at such a time as then?

some flee again
as in great flight
some struggle
potential clashes
in a great fight

others turn softly
yet in might
urgency

heart to heart
there is a turning
a yearning
to know all
about the One

that you see
for the first time
there is a calling
to know

a setting sun
in the glance
of smiles
as the night
of mystery is begun

revealing
each other
taught by experience
what this life
might be

but when
the seeking ones
find each other
there is a shining oneness

that lights
the unconscious
night
shadows play
until real is seen

and at last
in dialogical meeting
a You is glimpsed

a Holy Presence
You are the
chrysalis emerged

in the glistening
mutual love
of You and me.
