Great Mothers (new poem)

Great Mothers

by Tim Kavi

for all those who live
and for those who hope
one, may be found

it is written
mothers of the heroes
eternally reside
in echoing songs
of glorious triumph

sirens lost in the mist
overshadowed by her
who truly leads
to the harbor of home

goddesses in full reveal
their mighty garments
in queenly rise
contained in love's mighty fist

held steadfast
earth's children and young
taught in persevering ways
of love

instructed across
the oceans of space and time
lessons never forgot
coming in the clouds
of judgment's might

smashing injustice
assuring fairness
and freeing all who hurt
above the final abyss

there is the way made
plain and sure
teeth of dragon dulled
sickle of wheat, harvested
and put away

death and famine
are stopped by an angel
with humanity's kiss

journey of the swift
to provide aid and assist
to all who are heroes
and bravely exist

walking surely
hand in hand
to paths higher up

mothers of the heroes
eternally reside.

artist's afterthought: this poem, written last year on my own mother's birthday (8-21) and shared here to celebrate Mother's Day--is a homage to great mothers everywhere, Jung's Great Mother archetype--and the history of all moms and their enduring love who instruct all of us; heroes to exist. The last line and elsewhere in the poem--reveals an acrostic: mothers of the heroes eternally reside--where the first letter of each word gratefully & lovingly spells M-O-T-H-E-R. ~~TK.

When Mars Fell Asleep (New Poem)

When Mars Fell Asleep
by Tim Kavi

boys want to play army in fields
lined with mines
they walk among their friends' blood
ghosts in the shadows

at your lap o Goddess, sleeping
lies the gods of war
the weapons of war lie at their feet
abandoned as once you were

love has won out in the future of bliss
where shadows walk openly in the sun
and gardens are again planted
in romantic passions of youth revisited
even to the very old

the streets are cleaned of spoils
reminders of the follies of gain
while warlike tribes and leaders think
that nothing lasts of temperate mold
what is without entropy; only the power of love

love has vanquished the dark night of souls
but Mars is only sleeping
may he wake up and find you again and again
your love is everlasting and patient
cities are in your fold

but the bombed out ruins need to be rebuilt
into new shining squares
and the weapons turned into ploughshares
must be cleaned while children
are allowed to be children again.

Mars and Venus by Botticelli

For the hope of peace and knowledge of a sure love,
some might see a vague reference to the influence of Lucretius here--TK

Consolations: Songs of Grief Surprised by Life and Love (new poem)

Consolations: Songs of Grief Surprised by Life and Love
by Tim Kavi

in the consolations
of the dearly departed
there are the memories
of sad longing songs

Oh! To find each other again!

but high up in the arms
a grand scheme
are the absent ones
come again
to comfort us
in the sweet compositions
of enduring love.

I grieve the colors
of my parents
my childhood
my wandering youth

always the others too

in the approaching grays
a sunset
where in the horizon--I see appearing
love
in the face of my true love
mine and ours --
the kids
and the everlasting
dialogue of all my teachers
and friends.

Amazing Grace--Part II; The Amazing Love of Families (Essay) (Tim Kavi's VALENTINES BE MINE FOR NINE: Posting 7)

On the Love of Family and
the Hands that Hold Us (essay)
by Tim Kavi

(An essay about the Love of Family)

Posting on Day Seven of  VALENTINES BE MINE FOR NINE continues with another entry on the awesome love of family.  How important is it?  And how lucky are we to have it?

If we think about the love of families and the hands that hold us--we are often talking about times when we are dealing with stress in families. There, in  a family, is one place where many of us can thankfully be accepted, and more often than not, are loved at least to some degree.  While many of us do not live in perfect families, we do live in families that if we are lucky--can be a source of support when we really need it.

Now, outside of luck factors--there are some families that have learned how to coalesce as a unit, and have discovered that nurturing is there in a powerful way. Sometimes adversities have visited these families which resulted in a close knit type of support that is rarely seen at other times and in other places.

In short, there is something very special about families that love each other, and that have passed through the furnace of troubles and built a very strong love indeed.  Sociologists and anthropologists have long known that there are important benefits to family life.  Among these are care for offspring,  assisting sick family members back to health, or providing a place where one is accepted and loved.

Nothing builds this closeness and intimacy quite like the families that have faced medical adversities, or had one of its members born with a serious challenge.

Yesterday on this blog, I posted a poem as a tribute to one of these families that I am lucky to know. The type of family that I'm writing about here today in this column.  The kind of family that through adversities have grown close and strong in their support of each other, and through it all, have created an enduring atmosphere of love. To have such a family! Surely, this family I am writing about is certainly a good example of this special kind of love--the love of a close knit family.

Yesterday's poem 'Amazing Grace' described what I would call a close knit family that has been through some pretty hard times. And one of this family's three children was mentioned in my poem. I am referring to Grace, or 'Gracie', a child who was born with Down Syndrome.

Now Down Syndrome affects 1 out of every 691 births in the United States. Babies born with Down Syndrome may face a number of potential health problems throughout their life span and these can include congenital heart defects, respiratory and hearing problems, Alzheimer's disease, childhood leukemia, and thyroid conditions.

You can read about the characteristics and demographics of this condition by clicking here http://www.ndss.org/Down-Syndrome/Down-Syndrome-Facts/.

I would not want to draw attention to one poem or myself, but only to focus on that special little girl we learned about yesterday, Grace.  She and her family are to be commended, and appreciated. They are our true heroes!

Research should continue on Down Syndrome so that someday research can find a cure, or a means to prevent it, and to help those who suffer from it to have less hardships, better quality of life, and increased longevity.

There are many conditions besides Down Syndrome that a family can encounter.  There are enough troubles even in a typical adolescence. But there is no substitute for a loving family that has to face any of these things. Research has shown that a positive loving home can influence the outcomes of many chronic health conditions.

Grace was very fortunate to be born into such a loving family.  And wherever we are, and whoever we are, I can only say as this Valentine's Day approaches--that we are tremendously blessed and inspired by you, Grace, and your family. You teach us as well as any love story, that a family love story is one kind of love that love is all about. Namaste and God Bless You all.~~TK

Now, Speaking the Truth (New Poem)

Now, Speaking the Truth
by Tim Kavi

now, speaking the truth
life has in past times
seemed easier
and sometimes
it is so hard;
who can deny it?

yet, as long as there is injustice
as long as there's any hope of love

one cannot be silent
or tears will water the earth
and we must be born
many times in rebirth

gentle Guan Yin
you make me shine with your light
nothing can remain
in a distant night

all is plain
all is bright
revelation is the poetic
sight

there are those so mistreated
although they chant
your love entreated

I am talking about your sisters
Quan Yin
all around the Earth
longing for Freedom
to be treated as persons

they long to be
safe wherever they go
hold them close in your arms
or my tears cannot stop

I am sorry my Goddess
for many of my gender are a disgrace
I can only hope your love
lights this evil place

something must be done
Durga, shine the truth
Kali, try not to be too angry now

I try to hope our history
will end bright
so I write this poem crying

while all around us
Goddess, your sisters are dying

so my pitiful voice
is joined with brothers and sisters
in peace and for peace
who line the streets
Jantar Mantar

our clothes are black
and I say to you in power
we want our Freedom back!

Ma Durga, great mother
Isis, protector of children
save us before too late
waves of your Goddess face

wash ashore
in the hearts of all
embraced by your grace

now, we speak the truth
we need you more than ever

this guilty Earth
longs to know only You
and the gentle love where

all rest in a peaceful fate.

three steps (new poem)

three steps
by Tim Kavi

steps seem small
to the established ones
but to a baby
this is a large undertaking

first steps
are perhaps the bravest

for all of us
at anytime

you are stepping out
to confront the unknown
yet clinging to hope
to embrace a new idea
or a thought

who knows?
your steps could take you
to a solution
or something the whole world needs

or they might just
give you the confidence you need

any way
any how
anywhere

once you take
the steps
your life is forever
changed

now you are really going places!

Heavenly Vision (new poem)

Heavenly Vision by Tim Kavi

I am old and tired
I said
Come up hither
she said
I cannot find you
I am right here
I do not see you
my eyes are dimming

out of focus
a white blur
I think it is a dress
she is laughing
looks like she has a crown
daisies in her hair
there is a child with her
they are both laughing

a puppy is gnawing
on a stick nearby
we are having a picnic
there is cheese
toothpicks stick out
of the cheese and meats
and olives
now I am gnawing on a stick too

ahhhhh
all grows into clarity
I look at her
she is smiling
beaming love rays that seem
cloud like
many gardens dot the horizon

I have a new body
we hold hands
the baby is so happy

the dog plays
and fetchs the stick
he looks familar
to me

someone is coming
we are not alone
I tell them I love you
I am a little afraid

their warmth
gets there before they do
we both
know who it is

soon we are all laughing
and playing
incredible happiness
and the day seems to go on
and on
forever

I hold the baby's hand
I realize one must never take
anything for granted

happiness is in
the found love of greeting
and the encounter
of meeting.
